Bhopal: Just two days after young IPS officer was allegedly murdered by the mining mafia in Madhya Pradesh, a police team was on Saturday fired upon by some men suspected to be involved in illegal sand mining prevalent in Panna district of the state.

According to the sources, the police team escaped unhurt.

The incident took place when the team led by Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Nathuram Gaund and Sub Divisional Officer of Police J S Markam had gone to Ajaygarh, 40 km from here, on Saturday afternoon after they received reports of illegal sand mining in the area.

Earlier on Thursday, a 30-year-old IPS officer Narendra Kumar Singh was brutally crushed to death under a tractor-trolley driven by a member allegedly belonging to the mining mafia while trying to stop the vehicle carrying illegally quarried stones in Morena district in Madhya Pradesh.

Meanwhile, the Opposition Congress launched attacks at the BJP led Madhya Pradesh government charging it for the thriving mining mafia in the state.

Condemning the firing incident at the police personnel, Leader of Opposition in MP Assembly Ajay Singh accused the Shivraj Singh Chouhan government of giving protection to mining and liquor mafia in the state.

“Illegal mining is at its all time high in the last eight years during the BJP rule. There is no doubt that illegal mining cannot flourish without the protection of the state government," said the Congress leader.
