After the visitors were invited to bat first, Australia broke Sri Lanka's nine-year record of 260/6, which they scored against Kenya in 2007. Australian bowlers then restricted the Sri Lankan batsmen to 178 for nine in 20 overs to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.

Maxwell butchered the Sri Lankan bowling attack with an unbeaten 145 off 65 balls with 14 fours and nine sixes.

"I thought to give the bloke (Maxwell) an opportunity, I like a right-hand, left-hand combination at the top. Credit to him, he has worked hard at home. Tonight was all Maxi," said Australian Skipper David Warner.

"A little bit instinctive, tried to hit my areas based on the field. Been playing really well in the T20 format over the last 12 months," Maxwell said of his epic knock.
