New Delhi: The nation on Friday paid homage to veteran freedom fighter and former Deputy Prime Minister Babu Jagjivan Ram to mark his 106th birth anniversary. The day is observed as Samta Diwas.

Remembering Babuji

Vice President Mohammad Hamid Ansari, Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar, Leader of Opposition in Lower House Sushma Swaraj and several union ministers offered floral tributes at Samata Sthal. A prayer meeting was also organized at the site. Floral tributes were also offered at his portrait in the Central hall of Parliament.

Born in 1908 in Bihar, Babu Jagjivan Ram held various positions and headed several ministries in his more than 40 year-long political career. He remained a Member of Parliament till his death in 1986.

He was the Defence Minister during the 1971 Indo-Pak war which resulted in creation of Bangladesh. Jagjivan Ram joined Janata Party alliance in 1977 and served as the Deputy Prime Minister of the country from 1977 to 1979. Following his footsteps, his daughter Meira Kumar also joined politics and became the Social Justice and Empowerment Minister in Manmohan Singh-led UPA government in 2004.She became the first woman Speaker of the Lok Sabha in 2009.

Andhra CM to launch SC/ST Sub-plan Act

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy is all set to launch implementation of the SC/ST Sub-plan Act to mark the birth anniversary of late Babu Jagjivan Ram.
