Thane: Mumbra township, which dominated headlines last week when 74 people were killed in a building collapse, and its surrounding areas will observe a bandh on Friday to protest the civic authorities' demolition drive without announcing a rehabilitation policy.
The call for bandh has been given by citizens of the township and people from various walks of life. In wake of the April 4 tragedy, the worst in the state in recent times, civic authorities has launched a demolition drive against illegal structures in Mumbra and its adjoining areas of the district.
According to local residents, people have been living in these buildings since several years believing they were legal. Now demolition of these structures will render them homeless.
Hence, authorities should make arrangement for their rehabilitation before razing buildings which they deem as illegal, they said.
