Bangalore: A Bangalore court Friday rejected Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa's plea to exempt her from personal appearance in a case of amassing wealth beyond her known sources of income.

Special Court Judge B.M. Mallikarjunaiah also turned down Jayalalithaa's plea to allow her to give a written statement and depose through video conferencing.

Besides, he did not agree to her request to defer the examination till Sep 14 as she was busy with the budget session of the Tamil Nadu assembly.

Jayalalithaa is charged with amassing over Rs.66 crore between 1991 and 1996 when she was the chief minister of Tamil Nadu.

The case, filed in 1997, was transferred to Bangalore from Chennai in 2003 on the Supreme Court's directions to ensure a free and fair trial.
