Bayern on Wednesday signed the Morocco international who received jersey number 5 after putting pen to paper on a five-year deal until June 2019.

The former Roma defender is said to replace Pep Guardiola's defensive key player Javi Martinez, who is sidelined for six months following a torn cruciate ligament in his left knee.

"I am very glad to be here. It is a great pleasure and opportunity for me. I play now for one of the biggest clubs in the world," Bayern's new arrival told the clubs official homepage.

Bayern's sporting director Matthias Sammer added: "I am delighted that Medhi has opted for us. Benatia is a robust and ball winning defender with a good build-up play. He fulfills all qualities which entitle him to play for Bayern Munich".
