New Delhi: With several requests, sign boards and awareness programmes failing to convince the passengers to keep platforms clean, the Delhi Zone of the Northern Railway has decided to prosecute the offenders with Rs 200 fine.

To implement the project, the railway department would the avail services of `Rail Mitra’, volunteers who will keep an eye on the passengers littering on the platforms.

These Rail Mitras or volunteers will assist the railways in keeping a vigil on those passengers who do not adhere to the requests of not littering the railway property.

Confirming the development, Additional Divisional Railway Manager (ADRM) of Delhi Zone, Sudhir Garg said “We have started the Railway Mitra scheme where any citizens can approach the authorities or can register on Northern Railways’ Facebook page to register himself/herself as a volunteer. We will issue a limited period card to such volunteers.”

Garg added, “Till now about 50 people have registered as Rail Mitra.”

These volunteers will request the passengers not the throw rubbish on the platforms and if they don’t heed to their advice they could report the matter to the Station Manager who will in turn prosecute the offenders.
