Jalandhar: The day long bandh in Punjab called by various Sikh radical organizations in protest against hanging of Balwant Singh Rajoana who is on death row in case of assassination of former Chief Minister of Punjab Beant Singh passed off peacefully on Wednesday with minimal cases of violence reported in several parts of the state.

However, normal life was disrupted due to non-plying of government and private buses in the required number and closing of business establishments, markets and educational institutions.

Trains on several routes were also diverted during the bandh. The stipulated state board exams for class tenth and twelfth were also cancelled amid security concerns.

Amritsar: Complete bandh was observed in Amritsar and Tarn Taran districts on Wednesday. However, no untoward incident was reported from any part of districts. In the morning supply of essential items including milk, fruits and vegetables remained normal but the main markets of the city and towns, banks and schools remained closed.

Gurdaspur: Tense condition were reported in Gurdaspur and Dinanagar districts of Punjab with normal life reported to be badly hit due to heavy deployments of security personnel in the region. Schools and colleges and other government departments including banks remained closed on the bandh day.

Pathankot: The Sikh radical groups carried peaceful protest march in Pathancoat. The normal life in the city reported to be least hit as the city markets, government departments including banks remained open carrying out with their normal work.  However, the schools and colleges remained close amid security concerns in the city.

Hoshiarpur: The day-long state wide bandh claimed a loss of Rs 20 crore to the public treasury. The Sikh agitators carried protests in the city while shouting slogans demanding stay on the execution of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh’s killer. The rail traffic was also reported to be badly hit as the protesters blocked the Jammu-Ahmadabad Express for around one hour near Tanda station.
