Lucknow: In what could be seen as a political one-upmanship, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati who recently advocated bringing the Prime Minister under Lokpal ambit is herself out of the purview of Lokayukta.

While Uttar Pradesh has been constantly hitting the headlines for spate of graft cases, the Lokayukta cannot take action against even Gram Pradhans who have siphoned off funds allocated for the development of villages.

Interestingly, Mayawati-led government has stated that stern actions have been taken against cases of corruption and malpractices. However, the tall claims made by the government seem to have fallen flat as no fruitful result has come out in cases like NRHM scam and CMO murder.

Meanwhile, the Opposition is leaving no chance to slam the Mayawati government regarding corruption cases. According to state BJP spokesperson, Hridya Narayan Dixit, Mayawati should bring herself within the ambit of Lokayukta before supporting the Lokpal Bill.

Terming the BSP’s support to bring the Prime Minister under Lokpal is hypocritical, Samajwadi Party spokesperson Rajendra Chaudhari said, the entire Mayawati Cabinet is engrossed in malpractices. It is due to this reason the Chief Minister has not been put under Lokayukta.

According to Lokayukta NK Mehrotra, the state government is the only body to decide the contours of Lokayukta. He said, “In 1977 when the Lokayukta was formed, Chief Minister, Gram Pradhan, schools and colleges, government aided education institutes were kept out of the purview of the Lokayukta.

On the other hand, states like Delhi, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Gujarat and other states have empowered Lokayukta to bring CM and Gram Pradhan under its scanner.
