"BJP Parliamentary Board expresses its deep sense of gratitude towards the Government of India for its historic decision of conferring Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award, on two of the great sons of Bharatmata, freedom-fighter and great nationalist Pt Madan Mohan Malviya and former Prime Minister Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee,” the resolution read.

"By this decision, the government has not only respected the desire of millions of Indians but also gave expression to the sense of deep respect in the minds of all countrymen towards these two great national heroes. This is a fitting salutation to both Malviya ji and Atal ji for their unique contribution and unflinching commitment to the cause of the people of India," the resolution added.


    
The Parliamentary Board meeting was chaired by BJP chief Amit Shah and attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, a charismatic personality who crafted consensual politics that found acceptability across the political spectrum, was on Wednesday chosen for the country's highest civilian award Bharat Ratna along with late educationist and freedom fighter Madan Mohan Malviya.

The announcement came ahead of the birthday of Vajpayee, who turns 90, and 153rd birth anniversary of Malviya on Wednesday.
