Coimbatore, Jan 13 (Agencies): More than 1000 students of Bharathiar University staged a dharna on Wednesday, protesting against the handing over 1.3 acres to Anna University of Technology to construct new buildings.

Earlier teachers and staff of the University observed a one-day fast on January 8. The students raised slogans against the Government and University authorities for the sale of land, claiming it would seriously affect the future of coming generation and also research activities.

They said the land sold was being utilised by BU for research in medicinal and herbal plants.

Once Anna University starts constructing buildings, the plants and species in four to five acres around the campus would be totally destroyed, they said.

The vice-chancellor, Dr Swaminathan and senior police officials tried to convince the students to withdraw their dharna, which continued it till evening, police said.
