Bhubaneswar: A male hippopotamus broke open a barricade and attacked a younger female killing him in the Nandankanan Zoological Park here, official sources said on Saturday.

The two mammals had a fight inside the park on Friday and in the process the female, about two years of age, was killed.

In an effort to dissuade the hippos from picking up fights, the park authorities were rearing them separately by putting up iron barricades inside the water. However, the two fought after breaking open the barricade, the sources said.

A few months ago, another hippopotamus was also killed in similar fashion. With the death, the number of hippopotamus now stood at 13, including five male.
