Amritsar: With the Assembly elections in Punjab only a few months away, even the religious groups have jumped on to the bandwagon of political parties demanding clemency for the convicted Khalistani terrorist Devender Pal Singh Bhullar facing death penalty.

After President Pratibha Patil rejected Bhullar’s mercy petition last week, Shiromani Gurudwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) joined the save Bhullar campaign on Monday. The top Sikh body has decided that a delegation of the SGPC led by Punjab Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal would meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Taking its campaign further, the SGPC has also decided to set up a panel of five top advocates of Supreme Court to file a review petition before the president to save Bhullar’s life.

Briefing the media on Monday, SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar said that a five member committee comprising SGPC general secretary Sukhdev Singh Bhaur, executive members Rajinder Singh Mehta and Surjit Singh Garhi, Jasvinder Singh Advocate and H S Dhami would take off for Delhi on Tuesday to select the panel of lawyers.

He informed that the SGPC has invited Delhi Sikh Gurdwaras Management Committee, all religious Sikh organizations, Nihang organizations, Sikh saint communities and the members of Sikh Students Federation to join a meeting on Tuesday at 12 p.m in Teja Singh Samundri hall and chalk out the plan to save Bhullar’s life.

“We will run a movement at the national and international stage to save his life. We would make people aware that the death sentence to Bhullar has been awarded just because he is a Sikh,” Bhullar said adding that the Centre must come clean on why people involved in anti-Sikh riots have not been hanged till date.

Meanwhile, Bhullar’s relative and other members of his village are surprised at the sudden shower of sympathy over him from the political parties. They appealed political parties and other groups not to politicize the issue.
