PARIS: The Indo-Chinese pair of Mahesh Bhupathi and Jie Zheng ended their campaign at the French Open with a second round defeat in the mixed doubles event on Sunday.

The fifth seed Indo-Chinese pair lost 6-4, 3-6, 7-10 to unseeded duo of Rennae Stubbs of Australia and Brazil's Marcelo Melo.

Bhupathi has already exited from the men's doubles along with compatriot Leander Paes.

India's hopes in the mixed doubles are still alive as Paes and his partner Iveta Benesova have reached the quarterfinals, where they are set to clash with top seeded pair of Katarina Srebotnik of Slovakia and Nenad Zimonjic of Serbia.

Earlier on Sunday, Sania Mirza and her partner Elena Vesnina will take on Spanish duo of Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez and Anabel Medina Garrigues in the pre-quarterfinals.

In womens singles, former world number one Maria Sharapova cruised into the fourth round of the French Open with a hard-hitting 6-2, 6-3 victory over Taiwan's Chan Yung-jan.

Wearing a chic chick yellow dress on court Philippe Chatrier, the Russian seventh seed, once voted the most fashionable player on and off the court, powered to a 4-0 lead and there was no stopping her from then on.

Sharapova, who needs to win the French Open to complete a career grand slam, will take on Polish 12th seed Agnieszka Radwanska, who beat Belgian Yanina Wickmayer 6-4, 6-4.
