Chandigarh: Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda on Tuesday announced an ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh for the next of kin of Haryana Police constable Mahavir Singh who was run over by a truck being driven allegedly by a member of sand mafia in Faridabad district.

Singh had attempted to stop the truck carrying sand near the Badarpur border in Faridabad on Monday.

With reports alleging that the cop was crushed to death by a member of the 'sand mafia', Hooda on Tuesday said the guilty would be punished severely.

Haryana's Director General of Police Ranjiv Dalal also announced that a job would be given to a member of the family of the deceased constable.

Singh and his three colleagues had set up a checkpoint early on Monday following a tip-off that the truck, being escorted by its owner in a car, was carrying the sand and headed towards Delhi.

The truck driver escaped from the site but was later arrested at Badarpur while the person escorting in the car fled after leaving his vehicle behind.
