The real megastar who defeated death after Coolie accident
New Delhi: Superstar Amitabh Bachchan for whom age is just a number, stands strong even at 69 years of age and two major stomach surgeries. As he underwent an abdominal surgery on Friday, the tearful memories of his life-threatening accident while filming ‘Coolie’ give jitters to the hoards of fans joining hands for his speedy recovery.
The star bounced back in action after his near-fatal accident during the shooting for his hit-film Coolie on July 26, 1982. The actor survived on prayers after suffering a massive intestinal injury filming a fight scene with co-star Puneet Issar.
The hardcore actor was performing his own stunts in the film and one scene required him to fall onto a table and then on the ground. However, as he jumped towards the table, the corner of the table struck his abdomen, resulting in a splenic rupture with excessive bleeding. He underwent an emergency splenectomy and was in hospital for several months.
Not many would be aware of the fact that his character in the runaway hit Coolie was supposed to be killed in the end of the script but impressed by the actor’s real life victory in defeating death, director Manmohan Desai changed the storyline with the character surviving in the end.
Bachchan however kept himself away from films and ventured into politics and thought of trying his luck into business by launching the ABCL company. But, the love for Bollywood submerged deep in his heart made the once dejected star to return to the film industry around 1996. He has been holding the crown of the megastar since the start of the new millennium till now.
His fans were worried about his condition when the senior Bachchan had revealed about the upcoming surgery on his blog bigb.bigadda.com, which was held in the Seven Hills hospital in Mumbai on Friday.
"...This is being disclosed to the Ef (extended family) at this point of time -- a surgery that I shall be undergoing on the 11th morning. I do not wish to talk much on my medical condition, but trust and faith in my FmXt (extended family) allows me to do so," Amitabh wrote on his blog.
