New Delhi: Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Modi who had earlier turned down Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee's offer to head the empowered group of state finance ministers on Goods and Services Tax (GST) is likely to reconsider the proposal.

Pranab Mukherjee has convened a meeting of all state finance ministers on July 18. In that meeting it will be decided who will chair the empowered committee.

Before this, former Bengal Finance Minister Asim Dasgupta vacated the post following the Left Front's debacle in the West Bengal Assembly polls.

Finance Minister of Kerala K M Mani is also one of the contenders for the post.

According to the sources, Mani had written the letter to Pranab Mukherjee expressing his desire to be the chairman of the committee.

However, the UPA government is keen on handing over the baton to Modi to give positive signals to the NDA ruled states that have been resisting the tax regime change.
