The work done by RGMVP has prompted the Samajwadi Party government in Uttar Pradesh to sign an MoU to extend the programme to other districts as well, Ramesh added.
Women Self-Help Groups (SHGs) operate under the Centre's ambitious National Rural Livelihoods Mission (NRLM), which aims to alleviate poverty in the rural areas.
"Women's SHGs in Bihar are more successful than those in Gujarat. In Bihar, Rs 220 crore has been given as credit by banks to women SHGs in comparison to Rs 119 crore in Gujarat," Ramesh told reporters in New Delhi.
He said that in the last five to six years, it is Bihar which had taken the biggest strides in the empowerment of women.
"Their (Bihar's) work for women's SHGs is admirable," Ramesh said even as his party remains ambivalent about forging an alliance in the state with Lalu Prasad Yadav's RJD.
Congress has decided to fight elections along with Ram Vilas Paswan's LJP.
Ramesh said that though the UP government has somehow not been able to perform well in terms of women's SHGs, the association with RGMVP would give a fillip to its efforts in that direction.
According to Congress sources, RGMVP has reached out to over one million poor households in 252 blocks of 41 districts in the most backward and poverty-stricken areas of UP.
RGMVP has successfully developed a cost-effective, sustainable, and scalable poverty reduction and women's empowerment model, they claimed.
