Kolkata: Praising the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for her government’s effort to eradicate polio, the Co-chairperson of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Bill Gates wrote a letter to Banerjee for achieving polio-free target in the state.

In a letter sent by Gates on February 16, it was mentioned that “It is with utmost pleasure that I congratulate you on achieving a full year without polio. It is a milestone not only for India but also for the whole world.”

As informed by the media advisor to the Chief Minister Risabh Bhattacharya, Gates in his letter discussed about Mamata’s role for creating awareness. The letter said, "Your popularity as a people's leader can help overcome community resistance to vaccination and address migrant population which are at the highest risk for being immunized.”

It needs to be mentioned that the Gates oraganisation runs several health related programmes free of cost in India.
