As Tabu is celebrating her 44th birthday, let us take a quick deep glance at the span of her  life journey till date.

Meet Tabassum Fatima Hashmi a.k.a Tabu
Tabu's full name is Tabassum Fatima Hashmi. Everyone would call her Tabu out of love and later this name became her identity. Tabu was born on 4th November 1971 in Hyderbad. She never received fatherly love as her parents Jamal Hashmi and Rizvana got divorced. Once Tabu has said that she never wants to see her father's face and her mother is everything for her.

Her filmy family connection

Being counted in the category of Bollywood's big divas like Shabana Azmi and Smita Patel, Tabu had an attachment towards the Bollywood industry since childhood. Very few people know that Tabu is niece of  Shabana Azmi and Baba Azmi and her sister is Farah Naz who was a famous actress of 80s-90s. Shabana Azmi has played an important role in the filmy career of both the sisters as their mother didn't want them to work in movies.

Studious and a good singer during her childhood
Tabu belongs to an educated family. Her mother carried out all the responsibilities of the house as her father wasn't there. Her mother was a teacher and her grand parents were also professors resulting which there was an atmosphere of education in the family. It can be easily seen through Tabu's character that she was gentle since childhood. In an interview, her sister Farah has said that Tabu was very studious and she was a versed singer too. She also added that Tabu always used to get praises from everyone in their house and she was the one who would get scolded all the time. The same is being practiced till date.

Became rape victim at 14 years of age
Born in Hyderabad, Tabu came to Bombay in 1983 when she was 12-year-old, to complete her education. After studying in St. Xavier's college for two years, Tabu got a chance to work in Dev Anand's movie 'Hum Naujawan' when she was just 14-year-old. She played a sensitive character of a rape victim at such an early age. Only an actress like Tabu could take a decision like this. However, she was first seen on screen in 'Bazaar' and as an actress her first film was a Tamil movie 'Coolie No. 1'.

Dev Anand introduced Tabu to Bollywood
The credit for introducing Tabu in the Bollywood goes to Dev Anand. He wanted a young artist for his directorial movie 'Hum Naujawaan' in 1985 and the role of rape victim was very challenging. He had seen Tabu at Shabana Azmi's house after which he decided that he is going to cast her. Dev Anand told Shabana about his decision and tried to convince Tabu's mother over the phone, but was unable to convince her. Later, he asked Shabana to convince Tabu's mother and she was successful in her attempt and from there onwards, Tabu's filmy career has started.

Blamed Jacky Shroff for molestation
There is one controversial part associated with Tabu's life. Once Tabu went for a shoot with her sister. And there she blamed Jacky Shroff for molestation. However, there were no evidence against the incident, but after that Jacky and Tabu never worked with each other.

Got recognition for 'Vijaypath' with Ajay Devgn
Tabu got her first Bollywood offer from Boney Kapoor in 1987 where he signed her opposite Sanjay Kapoor in 'Prem'. But the making of this film took eight years. Meanwhile, Tabu did many other films which failed at the box office. Tabu got her real fame with 1994 released movie 'Vijaypath' where she was sharing the screen with Ajay Devgn. This film was a superhit and Tabu made a mark in the film industry. Tabu was awarded with the 'Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut' for Vijaypath.

World recognized her acting talent, did commercial films too

Starting at an early age of 14 years by playing a serious role, Tabu has been recognized worldwide for her acting skills. She has given many memorable movies till date like, Maachis, Virasat, Hu Tu Tu, Astitva, Chandni Bar, Maqbool and Haider. She has been applauded by the audience for her commendable role of strict inspector Mira in the recently released movie 'Drishyam', directed by Nishikant Kamat. Tabu, who is an established actress when it comes to movie in Hindi, Urdu, Tamil, Telugu and English, has left her audience awestruck through her characters in Hollywood movies like 'The Namesake' and 'Life of Pie'. She has also done many commercial movies like Vijaypath,  Saajan Chale Sasural, Jeet, Chachi 420, Biwi No.1 and Hum Saath Saath Hain.

Romanced Amitabh Bachchan, became mother to Shahid Kapoor

The actress who surprised the audience with various onscreen characters has even romanced the Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan. She played the character of a 34 year old woman who fell in love with a 64 year old man in the 2007 released movie 'Cheeni Kum'. The film was praised by all and it was Tabu's acting skills only, that despite of such age difference, she romanced Amitabh Bachchan with perfection and even the age difference between the two was not reflected. On the other hand, she did not hesitate even once while portraying the character of a mother to 34 year old Shahid Kapoor in 2014 released 'Haider'. Even the audience was amused by this decision of hers but then this is what a real artist is.

Tabu's love affairs in her real life

Tabu has been much into the limelight because of her personal life too. Her real life love stories were made popular among all. She was said to have affairs with celebrities like Sanjay Kapoor and Sajid Nadiadwala. But more than that, it was the South-Indian actor Nagarjuna whom she felt closest with. She was about to get hitched to Sajid. But then Nagarjuna came into the picture and she started to enjoy his company. Eventually, they both fell in love with each other. Nagarjuna was already married then, and he didn't intend to divorce his wife. While realizing that there was no future for the two, Tabu decided to part her ways from this relationship.

In limelight for kissing openly

Tabu made it again into the news for having an affair with the one-time actor Upen Patel. Upen was 10 years younger to Tabu, and if reports are to be believed, the two were found kissing each other at a night club. Later, all such news were said to be rumors and it was said that Upen Patel was just using her name to gain publicity. He was also seen in 'Big Boss season 8' and is much into the news these days for his relationship with Karishma Tanna.

When Tabbu was accused with serious allegations

Tabu seems to share a relationship with controversies. During the shoot of 'Hum Saath Saath Hain' in 1998, she was accused for illegally hunting a black buck. The rest of the star-cast including Salman Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Karishma Kapoor, Sonali Bendre and Neelam were also accused of the same. Later she was set free of all these accusations. The case is still going on Salman Khan.

Though unmarried, still witty on marriage

Though Tabu has had many affairs, but she hasn't been able to find her true love. She is still unmarried and her reply on questions regarding marriage is always that whenever she finds somebody who suits her, she would get married. Once she even gave an interesting reply to this question of marriage. Tabu said that one should stop asking questions related to marriage from Salman and her. Once she gave a befitting reply, saying that marriage should take place because of justified reasons and not because of social pressure.

Loves to live her life in reality

Tabu once said that her life is too simple. No matter how much deep you dig into her life, one wouldn't find anything. No matter how much she loves staying real, even she used to dream like an ordinary girl at one point of time. She too used to think that a real life prince would come, bow down in front of her and ask her to spend her entire life with her, but soon she realized the truth of life and came out of her dream land.

Movies in other languages too became super-hit

First seen in the movie 'Bazaar' in 1982, Tabu has made her way to the recently released movie 'Drishyam'. She is known to have acted in almost more than 80 movies during this period. Apart from Hindi, she has acted in Tamil, Telegu, Marathi, Malayalam and Bengali movies. She has even contributed to the Hollywood movies. Following her footsteps, many Bollywood actresses are now looking forward to work in the Hollywood industry. Many famous actresses have even started with it.

Tabu a.k.a lady Aamir Khan

Tabu has played almost all kinds of roles during her filmy career. Tabu has always took notice of the fact that her image in the Bollywood industry is that of an all-rounder actress. She can even be called as the 'lady Aamir Khan' when it comes to the selection of her movies. Tabu has shown much interest in those movies as well which the other actresses term as 'non-commercial' movies and refuse to act in it. Tabu did not care about any such thing and just looked at her character to give life to it.

First actress conferred with Padma Shree award

Tabu is one such actress of the Bollywood industry, who has been conferred with various awards. She has won 4 Filmfare awards in the 'Best Actress (Critics)' section. She received this award from her movies ' Virasat', 'Hu Tu Tu', 'Astitva' and 'Cheeni Kum'. Many times she has been won National Awards for the best actress. She was rewarded with the National Award for 'Maachis' and then 'Chandni Bar'. Along with this, she even received the 'Filmfare Award for the Best Female Debut' for her movie 'Vijaypath'. Twice she has received the Filmfare award for the best Actress (South). In 2011, Tabu was conferred with the Padma Shree Award by the Indian Government.
