Born on March 7, 1955 and in a Brahmin family, he received education at D.A.V. School in Shimla. He is also an alumnus and a former chairperson of the National School of Drama. 

Kher is one of those lucky actors to have worked in various languages - from critically acclaimed south-Indian films to different continents of English movies as well.

He made his acting debut in Bollywood with the 1982 movie, Aagman. He was seen in various other supporting actor roles such as Saaransh, Ram Lakhan, Lamhe, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, A Wednesday and many more. 

He has acted in about 150+ movies and won many awards for his comic performance as well.

He has bagged National Awards for his excellent performance in 'Daddy' and 'Maine Gandhi Ko Nahi Maara', for which he was also a producer.  

He is married to the multi-talented actress and LokSabha MP, Kirron Kher. 

He has been part of many successful international projects such as Bend It Like Beckham, Bride and Prejudice,The Mistress of Spices and the recent Oscar winner, Silver Linings Playbook. He will also soon be seen in the highly anticipated Midnight's Children.
