New Delhi: Condemning the recent comments of Press Council of India head Markandey Katju against Nitish Kumar led Bihar government over the press freedom in the state, the BJP on Tuesday asked him to refrain from making such comments as he holds a very sensitive post which has a certain amount of dignity attached to it.

“PCI is a respected body and we have a lot of respect for it. Katju must understand that as a PCI chairperson he has several sensitive obligations. It is the post of dignity and must not be biased,” BJP chief spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said.

He further added, “We have also fought for the freedom of press. Hence, such defamatory comment from a person holding a reputed designation is really condemnable.”

Highlighting the inquiry initiated by Katju over press freedom in the state, Prasad said, “He should have first waited for the probe report and then declared his viewpoints over it. It is not correct to make such public comments and so he must practice restraint.”

BJP's remarks have come in the wake of Katju's allegation that there is no freedom of the press in Bihar under the present dispensation.
