Once a stronghold of Rajnath Singh-led party, the region, due course of time got submerged in the moss of caste-based politics. The party is, however, confident of seeing the ‘bog blooming Lotus’, powered by Modi wave.

NaMo factor is playing a talismanic role in galvanizing the backward sections of the society and several disgruntled leaders. Another aspect which may work in favour of BJP is the internal tiffs and miffs between the ruling Samajwadi Party (SP) in Bundelkhand. Besides, another political powerhouse of the state – Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party candidate in this region is facing a gripping challenge from its evicted member.

Though the SP has three Vidhan Sabha seats in Jalaun (reserved) LS constituency, it did not induct any MLA from the area in the state cabinet. This did not go down well with the people of this region.

The BJP has tasted considerable amount of success in Yamuna, Betwa, Cauvery, Sind and Chambal, which forms the ‘Panchnad’ or Five Rivers but the changed situation has also taken a beating on the party’s scheme of things and the Lotus seems to be in dire need of some replenishment and rejuvenation.

Jalaun, in spite of being a Dalit-dominated area, has reaped rich results in favour of BJP leader Baburam. He marshaled BJP’s ferry in the assembly waters and his close aide Bhanu Pratap Singh was in command of the party’s vessel in the Lower House.

However, when the party denied Baburam party ticket in 2007 assembly elections, the development had its bearings on Bhanu Pratap as well. In the 2009 Lok Sabha polls, in spite of being a four-time MP, he lost to Samajwadi Party’s Ghanshyam Anuragi.

This sent the saffron party on fringes in the Vidhan Sabha as well but with Modi propelling its vehicle, a major turnaround of sorts is expected. Modi wave has generated such an effect that even an aged leader like Baburam is looking invigorated once again.

The BJP should, however, guard against smugness as underestimating Ghanshyam Anuragi may have a backfiring effect.

Apart from that, the saffron party is also taking heart from the fact that its firebrand leader Uma Bharti is contesting from one of the key hubs of Bundelkhand – Jhansi, where the Congress is smarting under anti-incumbency wave.
