New Delhi: The recently announced hike in power tariffs saw mercury soaring in the capital as the Congress leaders along with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), ruling the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, raised their pitch against the hike and demanded immediate rollback of the same.

In a meeting of the standing committee of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi on Monday, the leaders protested against the 22 percent hike in power tariffs. Congress Councillor and leader of Opposition J K Sharma said that he along with other Congress leaders would take up the issue with Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and ask for a rollback.

Accusing Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission officials of working at the behest of the government, Councillor Vijay Prakash Pandey said, “During the privatisation of electricity, fake promises were made saying that the benefits gained by the power companies will be made available to the public. But this never took place and now on the contrary people are being over-burdened with hike in power tariff.”

Rekha Gupta said the government's decision to raise power tariffs will cause huge loss to the MCD. The civic body's Standing Committee, in the meeting, also decided to approach the Lieutenant Governor for intervention.

After listening to all the arguments presented by the Municipal Councillors against the hike, a unanimous proposal was passed by the Standing Committee which was further forwarded to the Lieutenant Governor for consideration.
