Om Vir Singh, a retired army man, was the vice-president of BJP in Mirapur town. The 42-year-old victim was also into money-lending business and as per his daily schedule he was going to his village Mirapur when the incident took place.

Singh tried to retaliate with his revolver but the assailants fired a volley of shots at him and he slumped on the ground, dying almost immediately.

The assailants, after killing the leader, decamped with his licensed revolver. Police said that the motive behind the killing was yet to be ascertained, adding that the body has been sent for autopsy.

Following the incident, Singh's family members and the BJP workers staged protests and blocked a road.

Senior police officials, who reached the spot, assured the protesters of speedy investigation in the case. Security personnel have been deployed in the area.

This is the second killing of a BJP leader in a week. Vijay Pandit, a prominent leader of Noida was earlier shot dead in Dadri area on Saturday.

Shops in Dadri remained closed for the fourth consecutive day on Tuesday in protest against Pandit's killing.
