"Amartya Sen says he doesn't want Modi to be India's PM. Is Sen even a voter in India? Next NDA government must strip him off Bharat Ratna," the Rajya Sabha member tweeted on Tuesday.
Mitra said that Bharat Ratna awardee should stay away from politics. Justifying his demand the BJP leader tweeted, “Those who are upset with my suggestion about Sen and Bharat Ratna, can you show me examples of others who do party politics after getting Bharat Ratna.”

Other BJP leaders also came down heavily upon the noted economist asking him not to get influenced by anyone and should concentrate on his work. "Amartya Sen is a genius, he should concentrate on his work," BJP Lok Sabha MP Kirti Azad said.

Earlier, Sen in an interview to a news channel said, "As an Indian citizen I don't want Modi as my PM... He has not done enough to make minorities feel safe." On being asked why he did not want so, Sen added, "He could have been first of all more secular and he could have made the minority community feel more secure."
