Chennai, (Agency): Around 50 BJP workers were arrested for trying to stage a protest outside the US Consulate General here against the radio-tagging of Indian students duped by a university in US.

Police said the protestors, some of whom had worn chains on their ankles to symbolically protest the tracking device being fitted on Indian students, were arrested as they assembled outside the consular office without permission.

The agitators were led by senior leader of the party's state unit, Dr Tamizhisai Sounderrajan, police said. The BJP activists also raised slogans against the move by
the US authorities. They were later released on bail, they added.

A number of Indian students were forced to wear radio collars around their ankles after being duped by Tri-valley University, which has now been closed.
