BJP national spokeswoman Meenakshi Lekhi termed the Aadhar programme as ‘fraud’ and alleged that it regularised illegal stay of migrants in India.

While interacting with the students in Bangalore, Lekhi said that Aadhar is a dangerous programme that is in contravention of the Supreme Court directives. She claimed that the entire biometric data of people has been stored outside the country.

She said there are over three crore illegal Bangladeshi immigrants spread across the country, and added that allotting Aadhaar numbers to them posed a huge security risk to the nation.

BJP general secretary Ananth Kumar echoing similar sentiments said that Aadhar should be scrapped. He said that the card should not be given to non-Indian citizens. He also said that the data of Indian citizens cannot be held by a US company, which is servicing Pakistan also.

“I would have been ashamed to be associated with something like this. The UPA government is issuing Aadhaar and voter ID cards to illegal migrants,” Kumar said.

About Rs 3,500 crore was spent on Aadhar programme from the beginning of January 2009 till September 2013 with enrollment of 50 crore people. It includes operating costs as well as capital expenditure, i.e. on the infrastructure of land, building, machinery etc.
