New Delhi: The BJP has demanded an apology from Congress chief Sonia Gandhi over Congress MP Sanjay Nirupam’s objectionable remarks against the BJP leader and TV actress Smriti Irani.

“Nirupam has made anti-women comments and BJP strongly condemns it. Nirupam is a Congress MP and his party is headed by a woman, yet he has made such derogatory remarks. We expect Congress president Sonia Gandhi to take action against him and apologise herself for her party MP’s acts,” BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said.

During a TV show, Nirupam had attacked Smriti with references to her stint as a television actor. He had said, "I don't have to listen to you. It's been four days since you have entered politics and you already think you are a great political analyst...till yesterday you were dancing on television and today you have become a political analyst."

"This kind of language and choice of words by Nirupam on a news channel debate against Smriti Irani, who is our Mahila Morcha chief and MP as well as an established TV actor, is most unfortunate and painful. He crossed all limits of decency and decorum," Prasad had said.

Earlier on Friday, Smriti Irani had sent a legal notice to Nirupam for this ‘gross defamation’. The party is also exploring other legal steps that can be taken against him.
