New Delhi: Slamming the UPA government and the ruling Congress for targeting the office of Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG), principal opposition Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) on Thursday demanded clarification from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Senior BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi said that the shocking attitude of the government and Congress will lead the nation towards dictatorship.

“Accountability and transparency are the necessary ingredients for democracy. And the government is lacking both of them,” he asserted.

Answering to a question on PM questioning CAG press conference, Joshi said that it (CAG) has the power to call press conference and its duty to make the main features of the report public.

The chairman of Parliamentary Accounts Committee said that leveling baseless allegations against a constitutional body is unacceptable.

“The government is responsible for the leak of CAG reports before it was tabled in the Parliament,” alleged Joshi.

He maintained that as the rights and duties of CAG were clearly stated in Article 149, 150 and 151 of the Constitution, there was "no dilemma, confusion or ambiguity" on the intentions of CAG.
