Lucknow: Hundreds of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers and leaders were caned by police here on Monday when they were marching towards Raj Bhawan to mark their protest against amendment in Local Bodies Act.

"More than 50 partymen were injured in a lathicharge when they were taking out a peaceful march to submit a memorandum against amendment in the Act with Raj Bhawan," BJP MP and senior leader Lalji Tandon alleged.

The Bill, which has been passed by the both Houses of the state Assembly, proposes indirect election for the post of mayor and chairman in the urban local bodies instead of direct elections.

Party State President Surya Pratap Shahi along with city mayor Dinesh Sharma was amongst the three dozen BJP activists who got allegedly injured during the lathicharge.

The policemen entered the house of MP Tandon and allegedly damaged his car and other valuables.

More than 700 BJP workers were arrested, who were released later in the evening.

As per schedule, BJP mayors, chairmen and corporators gathered near Municipal Corporation at noon for taking out march in order to submit a memorandum to Governor B L Joshi. Surya Pratap Shahi and Lalji Tandon were spearheading the rally.

As the procession reached the capital, the party workers were intercepted by the police. As the party workers insisted to move towards the Raj Bhawan, the police resorted to water cannon and to disperse the BJP workers and leaders.

The situation deteriorated when one of the party worker man-handled an inspector and snatched his badge. The police had to resort to canning the activists which led to chaos. The party workers pelted stones in retaliation.

The agitated workers staged a dharna during the evening. The BJP has decided to observe a ‘protest day’ at district head offices on Tuesday.
