New Delhi: Alleging the distribution of rotten grains in the tribal areas through ration shops, CPI(M) MP Brinda Karat on Thursday raised her concerns in the Rajya Sabha and demanded for a special monitoring agency to look into the matter.

Reprimanding the government during the Zero-Hour in the Rajya Sabha, she said that on one hand grains are rotting, on the other people are sleeping empty stomach in the country.

Showing rice and wheat samples in the Upper House, Karat said, “The grains are rotten. There should be a proper investigation to bring the guilty to book.”

Further, Karat said that the government godown is packed with grains. The current Rabi season will give good yield of wheat and the government is likely to procure them but there are no empty warehouses.

She suggested that the grains should be distributed freely to the poor. It should be noted that recently Supreme Court had made harsh comments on rotting of grains and had advised free distribution to the poor.
