London (Agencies): Pop star Britney Spears has been voted as the greatest gay icon of all time in a new poll.

She regained the top slot by toppling US President Barack Obama and veteran performer Cher to gather 31 per cent of the vote in the Orange County Equality Project's poll.

Madonna came second with 25 per cent of the vote claiming it to be a close call between the two superstars to find the quintessential gay icon, according to media reports.

"When Madonna puts out a new album, she will be on top again. Madonna is the greatest icon the gay community has ever had," the Equality Project's Joel Waddell said.

Pop diva Lady Gaga, famous for her onstage antics was voted in third with 22 per cent, while 'Firework' hitmaker Katy Perry got 12 per cent votes.
