New Delhi: In what appears to be a bad news for over 1, 00000 staff, Government of India enterprises BSNL is preparing to offer voluntary retirement to them to lessen the huge burden of their salaries.

“The company has over 1, 00000 additional employees and it wants to offer voluntary retirement to them”, a top BSNL official said adding that if it does so the company’s salary expenditure would reduce.

According to him, most of the employees are inefficient at work and lack professional skills. They are underperformers as they don’t know how to handle the modern tools, he added.

Till March 31, 2011, the company's total number of employees was 2.81lakh. In 2004-05, the public service telecom company had a net profit of Rs 10,183 crore.

Since then, its profit has been on the wane. In 2010-11, the company suffered a loss of Rs 6384 crore. It might be due to 3G and broadband spectrum cost and increment for the payroll employees.

BSNL has planned to reduce its deficit in the next five years by collecting Rs 8000 crore through reduction in the number of real estate assets and towers.
