Modi, who was campaigning for senior BJP leader and party candidate from the Amritsar Lok Sabha constituency Arun Jaitley, welcomed Daljeet with open hands in the party.

With no body expecting such a move, Daljeet, who had stayed apolitical till date, staggered everyone by sharing the dais with Modi in Amritsar.

The Gujarat Chief Minister while welcoming Daljeet in the party fold said, “Today, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's brother Daljeet Singh has joined the BJP. This will further strengthen us. We are not a membership party. We form blood relations.”

Daljeet Singh joining the saffron party right before polling in Punjab has come as a major shot in the arm for the Shiromani Akali Dal- BJP alliance here, which is battling a strong anti-incumbency wave in the state.

Daljeet targeted Congress for their treatment of Manmohan Singh, saying his half-brother was never given the full authority and he has tremendous respect for him.
He added that Manmohan Singh has served the country with full dedication and honesty and he has joined BJP for the welfare of the nation and Punjab.

Meanwhile, sources in the Prime Minister’s Office have claimed that the family is surprised by Daljeet’s decision.
