New Delhi (Jagran News Network): In a breakthrough that was critical for the Uttar Pradesh government, UP Police on Monday arrested an accused in the case wherein a teenaged Dalit girl was seriously injured when three youths, including the person arrested, chopped off her nose, ear and a part of her hand after she resisted a rape attempt and raised an alarm.

An FIR has been lodged against the three accused but only one of them had been arrested till Monday.

The accused arrested, reportedly named Shiv Om, attacked the girl with a sharp object.

Mayawali-led state government is facing flak over the case with National Commission for Women chief Girija Vyas saying UP is unsafe for women.

Even state Legislative Assembly saw uproar on the issue as members of Opposition parties including SP, BJP and Congress demanded a debate on the recent rape cases.

Chairman Ganesh Shanker Pandey adjourned the House till Tuesday as Opposition members kept rushing to the Well.
