New Delhi: The results of the Tehri and Jangipur bypolls have shocked the Congress managers who would not have been thought of such outcome. The Congress suffered a huge setback in Tehri where its candidate Saket Bahuguna, son of Uttarakhand Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna was defeated by BJP’s Mala Raj Laxmi Shah, while in Jangipur, the party candidate and President Pranab Mukherjee’s son Abhijit somehow managed to win by narrow margin.

Generally, the bypoll result goes in favour of ruling party. But, BJP candidate has broken the myth by defeating Congress candidate Saket by comfortable margin of 22,694 votes in Tehri Lok Sabha constituency.

Saket was confident of his victory on the prestigious seat vacated by his father Vijay Bahuguna after his elevation to the Chief Minister in the last assembly elections. Vijay Bahuguna had launched massive campaign for his son but efforts went in vain. The internal bickering in the Congress seems to be the reason behind party candidate’s loss at the hands of his rival in the Tehri bypoll.

As far as Jangipur seat is concerned, the result is surprising for everybody. Jangipur has been the fiefdom of Pranab Mukherjee who won twice from here in 2004 and 2009 parliamentary elections by huge margin.

This time, Abhijit had to struggle hard to win the seat. He defeated his nearest rival CPI (M) candidate Muzaffar Hussain by slender margin of 2,536 votes. Interestingly, the Trinamool Congress had not fielded its candidate against Abhijit despite having souring relation with the Congress. However, Abhijit blamed FDI in retail and inflation for his water thin margin.
