Kolkata: A major cabinet reshuffle in West Bengal government is expected on January 2, with several ministers likely to get additional charge thereby reducing the burden on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The Chief Minister has already met Governor MK Narayanan regarding the cabinet reshuffle.

According to sources, some new faces are expected to be inducted into the cabinet. PWD and Transport portfolio is likely to be passed on to the new face after Subrat Bakshi, who after becoming Lok Sabha MP gave up the post. Sports Minister Madan Mitra could be given additional portfolio of PWD and Transport Ministry, the sources added.

Keeping in view local body polls in the state in 2013, seasoned politician Subrato Mukherjee is likely to be given additional charge of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj as Panchayati Raj Minister Chandranath Sinha may be shifted to some other department.

Veteran legislator Tapas Ray may also be inducted into the cabinet.

The Chief Minister herself retains several key portfolios, including home, health, land reform and minorities.

The Leader of the Opposition in the state assembly, Suryakant Mishra, had demanded from the government a full-fledged Health Minister keeping in view several cases of mishaps in hospitals that included fire in AMRI hospital which killed more than 90 lives.
