New Delhi: The Supreme Court will take up the contempt petition filed by the Tamil Nadu government against Karnataka Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar and others for defying the Apex Court's order to supply 9,000 cusecs of water from the Cauvery river.

Tamil Nadu had on Wednesday contended that Karnataka has deliberately violated the Apex Court's September 28 order to supply water to the state.

Earlier on September 29, the Supreme Court had ordered the Karnataka government to release 9,000 cusecs of Cauvery waters as per the decision Cauvery River Authority (CRA), presided over by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. On September 19, the CRA had ordered Karnataka to release 9,000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu from Sep 20 onwards till October 15.

Obeying the court's direction, the Karnataka government started releasing water to Tamil Nadu Sep 29 on, but on Monday night Karnataka stopped the supply of water.
