Raipur: A Joint Commissioner of Income tax department has been arrested for allegedly accepting Rs 15 lakh bribe from local businessmen, the CBI said on Friday.

The probe agency has also arrested three businessmen who had allegedly offered the bribe to him.

Joint Commissioner P W Athalye along with his I-T team had carried out searches at the factory of Raipur-based Khetan group on April 16, agency sources said.

The group is owned by four businessmen, including Arun Khetan and his associate Sapan Khetan.

"Three persons acted as middlemen for the accused officials of the Income Tax Department, Raipur for negotiating, arranging and delivering illegal gratification to Income Tax officials in collusion with the businessmen," CBI said in a statement.

On Thursday, a CBI team laid down a trap at Athalye's residence at Shankar Nagar in Raipur where the middlemen along with Khetans were scheduled to arrive.

When the trio emerged from the residence of officer after allegedly handing over the bribe amount, CBI team intercepted them and on their disclosure, recovered the bribe amount of Rs 15 lakh from the residence.

"The agency carried out searches at the residential premises of Joint Commissioner Income Tax at Raipur and another house at Pune. Incriminating documents were recovered. The arrested accused persons are being produced today in the Court of Special Judge for CBI cases, Raipur," the statement said.
