New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation has returned the 15,000 tapes of the conmersation held between Delhi-based hawala dealers Anil Bansal and R S Bansal and corporate lobbyist Niira Radia to Income Tax Department without using them saying it can only listen to those tapes which are directly related to the 2G scam.

CBI officials said, “We can accept only those tapes which are directly related to the 2G spectrum scam,” and added that the agency has no time to scan other tapes.

Significantly, the I-T department had given 15,000 conversations of Bansal brothers in May 2010 to the investigating agency saying they may be related to the 2G scam.

The I-T department had put the telephones of Radia and the Bansals under surveillance in August 2008 on the basis of a tip-off that Niira Radia was actively using the Bansals for facilitating business deals for her clients

The department recorded 15,000 conversations of Bansal brothers and 6,000 of Radia, sources said. The I-T department had given the tapes of Niira Radia to CBI in connection with the investigation of the 2G spectrum scam but remained mum on Bansal brother’s tapes.

One of the CBI officials said, “After listening to the tapes, CBI reached the conclusion that the tapes were related to Hawala business which can be investigated by I-T department.”
