New Delhi: The political circle in the national capital is abuzz with reports of CBI including the name of DMK patriarch Kaurnanidhi’s wife Dayalu Ammal and his daughter Kanimozhi in the supplementary chargesheet in 2G scam. Observers believe that if CBI directly accuses TN Chief Minister’s family members in the 2G scam, it would surely have a bearing on the DMK-Congress alliance.

Presently, there are 12 DMK ministers in the Manmohan Singh Cabinet. It would be noteworthy that the CBI in its first chargesheet had named nine accused including former telecom minister and DMK MP A Raja.

According to sources, CBI has been able to unearth vital evidence when it questioned family members of Karunanidhi. Therefore, all eyes are now set whether the CBI includes names of Dayalu, Kanimozhi and Kalaignar TV managing director Sharad Kumar in the list of accused in the 2G scam.

Dayalu, Kanimozhi and Sharad Kumar own 20, 60 and 20 percent shares, respectively, in Kalaignar TV.

CBI has already pleaded before the special court that Rs 200 crore of 2G money was routed to the Kaliagnar TV through partnership firms of Swan Telecom Promoter Shahid Usman Balwa.

In case CBI names close family members of Karunanidhi in the chargesheet, it would be one of the biggest setbacks for DMK, and especially Karunanidhi. It would not be surprising if he resorts to some strong steps in retaliation. He had adopted a strong posture when Raja was asked to quit from the Union Cabinet.

Though the DMK would desist from pulling out of UPA, it can surely withdraw from the Manmohan Singh Cabinet and support the Congress-led government from outside.

That would give Karunanidhi a chance to insulate his family members from 2G investigations to some extent.
