CBSE is taking these steps in order to promote application based learning so that the students can have more logical and analytical approach towards life and career. The new examination criterion covers English, Hindi, mathematics, science and social science for Class 9 and geography, economics and biology for Class 11. Though, CBSE has directed that the schools will only implement OTBA system for subjects whose study material has already been published.

Nothing has been finalized yet by the board and the official discussions are expected to take place in February. Class 9 and Class 11 students will be undergoing this examination in this academic year and the feedback from the examinees will help the board to decide further.

Scholars are divided in views on OTBA pattern. While some say that this will definitely help students in long run, other still claim that this system is not yet perfect.
