Haridwar: Seven three-tier panchayats along with district panchayat of Haridwar was nominated as the best panchayats in Uttarakhand.

To check the credentials of these panchayats, Central Government has sent a team to these panchayats. After the visit, if the team recommends their name, they will be felicitated with the National Award. Along with the award they will receive a grant of Rs. 20 lakh for developmental work in the area.

Two area panchayats and four village panchayats of Kumaon region have also been shortlisted by the state.

The Union Panchayati Raj Ministry has launched a scheme for choosing the best panchayat in the country. Every state will send the name of one district panchayat, one area panchayat and one village panchayat to the Union Ministry.

Six standards have been set for nominating the names of Panchayats. Keeping these standards in mind, Uttarakhand government has named six panchayats from the state.

If the panchayats fulfill the standards set by ministry they will get the award on April 24, the Panchayat Day.
