New Delhi: In a bid to ensure transparency in the allocation of coal blocks, Union Coal Ministry has decided to distribute coal blocks through auction. As per the new policy, the blocks would go to the highest bidder. The plan is likely to commence till the end of year 2011.

Giving details of the proposed policy, Coal Minister Sriprakash Jaiswal said, “The first phase work of marking those coal blocks which will be set for the auction is almost done. Guidelines in this regard would be finalized very soon.”

The Coal Minister held a meeting with stakeholders which included industries, representatives of state governments and other ministries.

To meet the coal deficiency in the country, the Ministry will be aiming to allot the blocks to those bidders who will show a keen interest to revive the coal production in the country.
