Jodhpur: A central team on Monday visited the two Jodhpur hospitals, where 13 women have died during childbirth in the last fortnight allegedly after being administered contaminated intravenous fluids, even as the opposition BJP demanded an "impartial" probe into the tragedy.

Sanjay Shah, manager of the pharma company that allegedly supplied the contaminated consignment, was today quizzed by police which brought him here following his arrest
in Indore on Sunday.

"He will be produced in the court on Tuesday and police remand will be sought for further interrogation," DCP H P Sharma said. Shah is the first person to be arrested in the case.

A three-member team of the Union Health Ministry inspected Umaid and MG Hospitals and held discussions with the hospital administration.

Voicing concern over the maternal deaths, the National Advisory Council (NAC) headed by Sonia Gandhi had sought an explanation from the Health Ministry.

Earlier, a two-member team from Jaipur had also visited the hospitals and submitted its report to the state government.

"We are investigating the matter and trying to extract information from Shah regarding the spurious I V fluid" allegedly supllied by the Indore-based Parental Surgical India Pvt. Ltd., DCP Sharma said.

The opposition BJP attacked the Rajasthan government over the handling of the issue of maternal deaths, which has been raised in the assembly and in Parliament.

Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje Scindia demanded an "impartial" probe into the tragedy.

"It is surprising that the state government woke up after the death of 13 women and has also given a clean chit to the health department. The matter should be investigated impartially," said the Leader of BJP Legislature Party in a statement.

The Rajasthan government had ordered an inquiry into the deaths by Jodhpur Divisional Commissioner who has been directed to submit his report within 15 days.

The state government has also suspended a drug inspector and a store keeper of one of the two affected hospitals in Jodhpur.
