New Delhi: The informal Group of Ministers (GoM) headed by Pranab Mukherjee on Wednesday allowed export of additional 10 lakh bales of cotton during the current season of cotton crops which will end in September.
Earlier this season, the government had approved exports of 55 million bales.

The country had already exported 52.5 lakh bales and the remaining quantity would be allowed to be exported, Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma said after the meeting. The rest will be exported by the end of September.

The Agriculture Ministry was also in favour of allowing additional exports of 15 lakh bales in the 2010-11 season so that farmers can earn more. But, the Group of Ministers finally approved export of 10 lakh bales. 

Ministry of Agriculture estimated that 339 million bales of cotton in the country this year is expected to produce. Last year the country produced 242 million tonnes of cotton bales.
