New Delhi: In order to strengthen the country’s defence sector, the Centre has decided to overhaul the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited.

For this former Cabinet Secretary and Planning Commission member BK Chaturvedi-led committee has been entrusted with the task of providing suggestions for renovating the Public Sector Undertaking, defense aero unit.

Defence Minister AK Antony said, “The committee will give its report by March 2012. On the basis of their suggestions, the HAL will be given new responsibilities.”

It is worth mentioning that the HAL is the nodal agency for technological exchange and domestic production.

While the HAL is domestically producing fighter planes such as Sukhoi-30 of Russia, it is also responsible for making and developing indigenous light helicopter Dhruv and fighter jet Tejas.
