Chandigarh: Shiromani Akali Dal President Sukhbir Singh Badal on Wednesday said the state govt had demanded Rs 5,200 crore as drought relief from the Centre, which has not been disbursed till now.

Alleging that Congress-led UPA government was following anti-Punjab policies, he said whether it was debt relief of Rs 74,000 crore, economic package or drought relief for the state, Punjab has not received adequate funds.

When asked about property tax, Badal said "we were forced by Union government to levy property tax on the urban population as a precondition for releasing JNRUMN funds."

He said "last year we lost Rs 1100 crore grant just because we refused to levy property tax and this year Rs 900 crore grant would have gone to drain if we had not imposed these taxes."

He said instead of staging a road show or dharna in Punjab against taxes, Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh should stage it before 10 Janpath to get alleged anti-Punjab policies changed.
