New Delhi: After much hue and cry, the UPA has finally given indication to rethink over its proposal on the Lokpal Selection Committee. The proposed move of the UPA government to include Director of Allahabad’s National Academy of Sciences in the Lokpal Selection Committee had stirred up the hornet’s nest.

When questioned over the issue, Finance Minister P Chidambaram has given a hint to rethink the proposal. While addressing a press conference on Monday, Chidambaram said, “There is no harm in reconsidering the names for the Lokpal Selection Committee and only after reviewing it, the Lokpal bill will be presented before the Cabinet.”

Danik Jagran in an article on June 23 had questioned the inclusion of the Director of Allahabad’s society in the Lokpal Selection Committee.

Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, Arun Jaitley had also raised fingers at the Lokpal Selection Committee. Questioning the move, Jaitley said, “We fail to understand the Director’s role in the selection committee.”

The selection of the Director is also surprising as the government had chosen him above Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG). Even prominent scientist Professor Yashpal was surprised by the government move. “The society of Allahabad is not most important scientific organization in the country,” he said.
